The Galo people compromise much of the population. The people here mostly speak Galo language which is related to Chinese and Tibetan languages. The people mostly practice Donyi Polo as their religion and celebrate Mopin which is an important agricultural festival.

The majority of the population of Basar is dependent on agriculture as their occupation. The plains of Basar are suitable for wet rice cultivation and fruits like oranges and pineapples.

This is one of the oldest monasteries. It is located in a hill top in the westernmost part of Mechuka in West Siang. According to oral history, this Gompa is a contemporary of the legendary Tawang Monastery. It is called Samtem Yongcha of Mahayana sect and is around 400 year old. One can reach this monastery by road. It is one of the major tourist destinations of this district.
